1. Ratcliffe became leader of Jamestown because Gosnald, the
previous leader, died.
2. Captain Kendall was killed because he tried to change the
course of the voyage without John Smith’s approval.
3. Smith becomes Powhatan’s captive because he set out in a
canoe to look for the head of the river when ‘200 savages’ attacked him.
4. During Smith’s stay with Powhatan they feed him before
attempting to execute him, during which Pocahontas throws herself over him to
save him. After he does chores and gets them guns.
8. I believe Smith is not a very credible author overall. Daily life
in Jamestown while he is there may be somewhat correct but I’m sure that not
everyone jumped to do what he said when he said it. His views on Native
American culture make him a very unreliable narrator as he saw them as savages.
His own actions are very, very biased to make himself look good. Conflicts that
occurred in Jamestown are always other peoples fault and John Smith was never
the bad guy.
